You've Got A Sporting Chance
Tonight my eldest son and my husband are at a professional soccer game in the UK. There is a phenomenon in the sporting world outside of North America that requires some consideration by the music world.
Why is it that so many people will sing at the tops of their voices for their favourite sports team? How is it that 50,000 people - mostly men - will sing out the beautiful hymn "Abide With Me" at the FA Cup Final, and have since 1927, but won't open their mouths to sing outside of the soccer stadium? What is it about the passion for sport that can get these people singing? I don't know the answers, but it is worth looking into, and tapping into.
In the meantime, these last few days I have had to myself. Home alone - and I am basking in silence. I have done some singing, and once or twice have had music on, but mostly I am surrounded by a rich deep silence that is feeding my soul. In my previous blog post I talked about our constant "wallpaper" of sound. If you get a chance today, why not try turning it off? Bathe in the beauty of silence? Then be more deliberate with what, when, and how you listen to music.
Or take it a step further. Watch some sport and sing out!
Yours, in song and in silence, until next time.
