Sing YourSelf

Save the date!  I have been invited to lead a full day of vocal improvisation in Calgary on September 24th 2011.  It's a Saturday.  It will be at St. David's United Church (3303 Capitol Hill Cres NW Calgary) and the investment is a mere $75.  To register contact Diana at diana@slaters.ca.  So that's the information, but the fact is that I'm really really looking forward to it.  You can do so much more in a full day of improv than you can in an evening!  We'll be doing vocal percussion, harmonies, melodies, soloing and deliberate listening.  One of the best things about it is that there is no such thing as a wrong note!  I think of it as colouring outside the lines, or unleashing your "inner Ella" - Ella Fitzgerald being the indisputable queen of scat singing.  I feel really honoured to be asked to lead a workshop like this.  I'll keep you posted on other workshops I'm doing - evenings or full days.

If you're wondering where the title "Sing YourSelf" comes from, it was a serendipidous discovery for me.  Immediately after a cup of tea with my friend Jan where we discussed beginning improv evenings in Canmore, I went home and had more tea and, with a rare quiet hour, read the newspaper.  That day in the paper there was reference to a poem called "Song of Myself" by Walt Whitman - an exerpt:  "I celebrate myself, and sing myself / And what I assume you shall assume / For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you".  It's a neat poem.  So I borrowed the idea because it is so fitting to improv - you sing your own thing.  Your song is born from who you are; from what you're going through at any given moment.  You are truly singing your very self when you sing improv, and you are the only person who can sing that song.  And yet, you're singing in and with a group of other individuals who can support you, draw from your song and add to it.  Part of the whole.  Harmony.  So come, sing your Self with me sometime when you get a chance.  I'd love to sing with you. (not to mention it's so much FUN)
